Rusbridger has actually done some amazing stuff over the years. If it weren’t for him, Rupert Murdoch wouldn’t have been chased out of the U.K over the phone hacking scandal. He was the only editor in the U.K who believed his journalist Nick Davies, that the story was much bigger than the initial little incident of one reporter and one private dick being busted. He and a couple of journos kept onto it for years, his primary reporter and he being visited by top cops who later resigned under fire - he just about lost his job over it(none of this is exaggeration from him) - really, it did take a lot of guts. And that’s not the only great thing he’s done. It’s the latest big one though.

However when he took on Glen Greenwald, I was saddened for The Guardian - and pissed off. I knew they’d do something big with GG, and I knew it would be inherently dishonest. I thought - I KNEW - that Rusbridger was/is a far better man than that.
However I also understand. He’s been hounded by the right wing for decades. He’s been threatened countless times over the years(also not exaggeration from him) - he’s been a target for authoritarian politicians and large corporations from the U.K and around the word for ever - yet it hasn’t stopped him presenting and supporting some of the best journalism that the word has seen over the past 20 years. Countless great journalists can attest to that. Sure, he may have gone to far a couple of time over the years, but his body of work - up until this episode - has on the whole been extremely impressive, and priceless to the community he serves.

But yeah - this episode suggests to me that he needs to take a look in the mirror, and ask himself whether he ought to start a blog, or even an advocacy journalism company - and hand over the reigns of The Guardian to someone who’s not as intensely involved as he is.

It’s easy to tar him with a couple of instances of bad judgement and forget his actual body of work. But it’s not honest.

As for Vice, they do some great some FANTASTIC work. But I’d never trust this kind of story to them. The editor, Moynihan I think his name is (he used to be the editor of Reason Magazine, for goodness sake!) has to be one of the most dishonest, cliche-driven, naive, teenage-level libertarians I’ve come across in the adult world (he still believes in the long disproved nonsense that private corporations are inherently more efficient, will create a better product, and are more honest than the government - regardless of the product or service! Apparently the old truth about motivation doesn’t hold much water in libertarian circles. Let alone being open to the real world contributing to the shape of political ideas). He’s been Breitbrat-level dishonest about liberals, and about Democrats. Then we have master Murdoch owning 10% of Vice now, and all that dripping sarcasm - because after all: Rusbridger is an unabashed liberal, and we can;’t treat a liberal with any real seriousness - that would not be a good look.

Paul you mention about that they left out a 2004 incident. They also left out most of his great work. That he ought to be judge upon.
Even with this disaster that has been hiring then supporting the ‘reporting’ of Greenwald, he’s still done more for journalism than most editors have - or would even consider. They’re far too cowardly. Far too interested in keeping their contacts happy and bridges un-burned, to support any real, substantive news stories and journalism.
Rusbridger can not be accused of that.

Shit. Another rant I had no idea would be so long. Sorry!
